Description

SOUTH OF NO NORTH is a Krautrock inspired free Jazz supergroup with only one album, “Octopussies Liquor Store” released in 2011. The band consists of Laurent Baudoux (Sun Papa) on Keyboard Farfisa, Laurent Delforge (Squeaky Lobster) on Bass, Jean-Henri Rigo (Flash Bunny) on Guitars, David Meunier (Naan) on Drums, and Cédric Stevens (Acid Kirk) on Prepared Guitar.

The main driving impulse behind the band was Cédric Stevens, one of Belgian techno’s pioneers whom has been DJing throughout Europe since 1993. In 1997 his obsession with free form jazz, psychedelic, experimental and avant-garde music lead him to become the co-founder of Elf Cut Records, further leading to his work as an A&R. He wanted to explore new territories so embarked on the project S.E.L.; SYNCOPATED ELEVATOR LEGACY. Some of the songs appealed to John Peel who gave them airplay on his BBC show.

In 2003, Cédric, Flash Bunny (Jean-Henri Rigo) and Naan (David Meunier) began a new project known as the DRIFTING BEARS COLLECTIVE. The debut was a psych noise exploration called “South of No North” released in 2007 on vinyl only, and received praise by English magazine The Wire.

Soon to join were Squeaky Lobster (Laurent Delforge) and Sun Papa (Laurent Baudoux) and the quintet began working on the next album, with a departure in musical style. This new band became SOUTH OF NO NORTH and released their album “Octopussies Liquor Store”, a more professional sounding Krautrock approach, and yet still embracing their love of psychedelic, free jazz, experimental noise and obscure forms of world music.
